In 1863, Bourjois was born in the theatre district of Paris. The brand was created by actor Joseph-Albert Ponsin. He was a passionate artist who formulated makeup and perfumes for actors and actresses in the comfort of his own home.

In 1868, Ponsin entrusted his entire business to Alexandre-Napoléon Bourjois. The company flourished in the hands of Monsieur Bourjois, who made the brand BOURJOIS internationally renowned.
